Maximilian Klein von Diepold, born in Düsseldorf, was a German painter known for his impressive landscape paintings and seascapes. The son of the renowned painter Friedrich Emil Klein and the poet Friedrika Wilhelmina Ada von Diepold, he grew up in an artistic environment. He took his first steps in painting under the guidance of his father, who taught him the basics of art. From 1889, Maximilian Klein von Diepold studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Lauenstein, a well-known representative of the Düsseldorf School of Painting. He later continued his training at the Antwerp Academy of Art, where he further refined his techniques and developed his own style. Klein von Diepold was a founding member of the Norderney Artists’ Association, an artists’ organisation dedicated in particular to the depiction of North German coastal landscapes. His brother Julian Klein von Diepold was also a member. Maximilian Klein von Diepold specialised in landscapes of the Eifel and the Westerwald as well as seascapes of the north German coast. His work “Norderney” shows a lively beach scene with colourful wicker chairs and bathing tents against the backdrop of a dark blue sea with gentle, white-crowned waves and a light blue sky. With his loose brushstrokes and masterful choice of colours, Klein von Diepold succeeds in capturing a fresh summer atmosphere and the typical North German beach atmosphere. His maritime paintings are characterised by a light and relaxed depiction that draws the viewer into the scene. Maximilian Klein von Diepold is considered an outstanding representative of the Düsseldorf school of painting and a master of depicting North German coastal landscapes. In addition to landscape paintings of the Eifel and the Westerwald, seascapes of the North German coast were the main subjects of his works. His maritime depictions are still highly valued by art collectors and maritime painting enthusiasts today. As a founding member of the Norderney Artists’ Association, he had a decisive influence on North German landscape painting. Thanks to his training at the Düsseldorf and Antwerp art academies and his close association with the Düsseldorf School of Painting, he developed an unmistakable style that made him an important artist of his time.
