What is particularly striking about the works of the Swedish painter Nils Edvard Kreuger is the strong influence of the French Impressionists. This can be explained by numerous stays in Paris, where he was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens and the Académie Colarossi in the French metropolis from 1881 to 1887.
After a short stay in Varberg, Sweden, where he devoted himself more intensively to outdoor painting together with Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström, he resumed his work in Paris before later moving to Stockholm. During his stay in France, Kreuger joined the French Impressionists and took part in the opposition of the Swedish artists against the Stockholm Academy.
This negative attitude towards the strict requirements of the academy is expressed in his original oil painting, which developed into a broad, simplistic style of painting, especially in the later years. “Sunny country road” can be counted in these later creative years. The influence of French open-air painting is unmistakable in its quick brushstrokes, the bright colours and the simplified scenography.
