Bernhard Oscarsson was a Swedish painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He first studied at the Althins painting school before moving to the Stockholm Art Academy. He continued his education through his travels to Spain, Italy, France, Holland and Germany. He is best known for his portraits, nudes, genre scenes and, above all, for his cityscapes of Stockholm.
The “Old Town of Stockholm”, which he made in 1924, is one of them. From an elevated position, Oscarsson chooses the view of the aisle of Riddarholm Church on the island of Riddarholm in the old town of Stockholm. The church was built between 1280-1300 in the Gothic style. Over the centuries, renaissance-style funerary choirs were added, and our gaze now falls on them. The Riddarholm Church has a special position because it is the burial church of the Swedish kings. The street around it is called “Birger Jarls torg”. We are on the south side of the building and look towards the Riddarholm Canal. The building on the right is the Higher Administrative Court (Högsta förvaltningsdomstolen) in Stockholm.
Oscarsson’s works are represented in many private and public collections, such as the Museum in Eskilstuna and the Cultural History Museum in Sofia.
