The Parisian painter Pierre Nimier is mainly represented on the art market by Mediterranean oil paintings depicting beach scenes or, as here, a view of the New Mosque Jamma al-Jdid in Algiers.
The mosque was built in 1660 and, unlike the majority of Maliki mosques in North Africa, belonged to the Hanafi school of law. During the French colonial period in Algeria, the mosque was also called Mosquée de la Pêcherie due to its proximity to the coast, which means ‘Mosque of the Fisherman’s Wharf’ in English and ‘Mosque of the Fishery’ in German.
