A year after he gave up his directorship, he created the “Still Life with White and Red Amaryllis”. The amaryllis, also known as the knight star, is one of the few plants that bloom in winter between November and February. With its tall growth and distinctive colours, it has always stood for grace, pride and beauty. In Stockholm, where the winters are long, the colourful flowers encouraged Hjortzberg to execute this design.
Olle Hjortzberg was a Swedish painter and graphic artist. He received his first lessons from his father, who instructed him in watercolour painting. In 1886 he moved to Stockholm to be taught ornamentation by the architect and illustrator Agi Lindgren and from 1892 studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. After his marriage in 1989, he travelled with his wife to Florence and Perugia in Italy and then on to Syria and Palestine, where the oriental environment influenced his art. In 1902 he visited London before travelling to Italy again to study the Old Masters in Rome and Byzantine art in Ravenna. In 1905 he returned to Sweden and devoted himself entirely to Christian art. From 1911 to 1937 he taught at the Academy and was its director until 1941.
