Carl August Johansson came from Härnösand, Sweden. In Stockholm he became a student of Edvard Perséus, who was a graduate of the Stockholm Art Academy and the Düsseldorf School of Painting. After that Johansson left Sweden and went to France and Italy to further his education. He mainly painted Swedish landscapes, which he then sent to exhibitions in Stockholm, Berlin, Munich, Paris and San Francisco.
As for many artists of his generation, the developments of Impressionism in Paris were revolutionary and had a lasting influence on Johansson. The “Spring Tide” of 1899 was created under this impression. .
