Joseph Kohlschein the Younger was a German painter, draughtsman and etcher. He was the son of Joseph Kohlschein the Elder and always added “the Younger” to his signature to distinguish him from his father.
Having previously begun an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and graduated from the Kunstgewerbeschule, he studied at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie from 1899, initially with Peter Janssen and Fritz Roeber, before becoming a master student in the landscape class with Eugen Dücker.
After his studies in Düsseldorf, Joseph Kohlschein the Younger painted numerous light-filled landscapes with an Impressionist character, which were influenced by French Impressionism.
Kohlschein was close to the “Sonderbund” but was never a member. Like his teacher Eugen Dücker he practised plein air painting. His paintings show a fine colouring in primarily small-spotted colour application with a clear, structured composition.
Besides his landscapes, his interiors and his wonderfully lively flower still lifes are impressive.
