Willy Kukuk was a landscape and figure painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting. He studied at the academy in Düsseldorf as a pupil of Peter Janssen. He then continued his studies at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. His travels took him to Munich, Switzerland and Italy. He was a member of the artists’ association “Malkasten” for around 20 years. His works were represented at numerous exhibitions, including in Düsseldorf and Munich as well as the “Sonderbundausstellung” in Cologne in 1912.
“Azalea Blossom on Lake Como” captivates with the luminosity of its colours and the impasto application of paint. We are looking at a fragment of a park. This is designed with bright splashes of colour in red, yellow, pink and different shades of green. This is the famous azalea blossom in the garden of Villa Carlotta on Lake Como (near Tremezzo).
“Azalea blossom on Lake Como” is an impressionistic picture that radiates joy and good humour. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of the colourful and also very impasto garden motifs by Max Liebermann – an internationally renowned main representative of German Impressionism.
