Born in Mannheim, Peter Dreher studied under Karl Hubbuch, Wilhelm Schnarrenberger and Erich Heckel at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 1950 to 1956. Just two years later he was awarded the Youth Art Prize and in 1965 the Rome Prize. He later became head of the painting class at the same academy and was awarded the title of professor in 1968. He received several awards for his artistic achievements, including the Reinhold Schneider Culture Prize of the city of Freiburg in 1976, the Hans Thoma State Prize in 1979 and the Erich Heckel Prize of the Künstlerbund Baden-Württemberg in 1995.
His paintings of water glasses, painted at different days and times of day, can literally be seen as portraits that capture the essence of our lives and show how everything can be found and found again in an everyday object. With the same fascination he created his series of keys, portraying different keys, as in this work.
