The work “In a Hamburg Park” belongs to Eitner’s preferred subject matter. He often chose scenes or places around Hamburg, which he then put on canvas in an impressionist manner. The summer atmosphere in the park with its bushes, ornamental shrubs and trees is enhanced by the light blue sky.
Ernst Eitner first worked as a lithographer in Hamburg. From 1887 he then studied at the art academy in Karlsruhe, at the Düsseldorf academy and at the Antwerp art academy. Eitner travelled a lot and enjoyed visiting Paris, London, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, Southern Germany and Belgium. From 1894 to 1909 he was a teacher at the painting school for ladies Valesca Röver in Hamburg and a founding member of the “Hamburg Artists’ Club”. Eitner exhibited regularly at the major German art exhibitions in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Düsseldorf and Bremen. In 1894 he took part in the Paris Salon and in 1911 in the international exhibition in Rome.
