The Danish painter Viggo Helsted loved to paint marine pictures. He was the son of the composer Carl Helsted and the brother of the composer Gustav Helsted.
Viggo Helsted was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1879 to 1883. Weilbach’s Künstlerlexikon states that one of his teachers was his distant relative Frederik Ferdinand Helsted. This is unlikely, however, as he died in 1875. Viggo Helsted’s work consists mainly of naturalistic marine paintings, which made him a popular painter in his genre. After the death of his wife in 1936, a scholarship was established in her name in 1938, the “Memorial Scholarship for the Marine Painter Viggo Helsted and his Wife Anna, née Knudsen”, which is awarded annually to artists who have exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition.
