Segundo Matilla, born in Madrid, completed his training and career in Barcelona. He studied at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts under Antonio Caba. An outstanding exponent of Spanish Impressionism, he participated in numerous exhibitions in Barcelona, including group exhibitions of the Círculo Artístico (1895), International Exhibitions of 1891, 1894, 1896 and 1898, and art exhibitions of 1918 and 1919. His works were also exhibited in Paris and at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1897.
Matilla was a talented painter who excelled in landscapes, marine painting, portraits and still lifes. In landscape painting he preferred evening hours. He also taught talented painters of the next generation, including Joaquim Terruella and Antoni Rosell Altamira.
His works are exhibited in various museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Prado Museum, the Pablo Gargallo Museum in Zaragoza and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as in international private collections.
