Günther Uecker produces embossed prints by hammering nails into a wooden plate that serves as a printing block. This is pressed together with wet, handmade paper in a printing press, whereby the nail relief is embossed into the paper. The high pressure (up to 1,800 kg) creates a haptic structure. After drying, characteristic paper waves are created. Uecker can then further process the print, e.g. by adding colour or additional materials. The exact process varies depending on the work, the printer and Uecker’s artistic decisions.
