Since the 1960s, Sean Scully has been painting abstract works with stripes, blocks and grids in rich colour tones. His soft edges and uneven applications of colour lend his compositions a tactile quality that emphasises the interplay of material, light and form. Scully, who also works in printmaking, drawing, watercolour and sculpture, combines formal rigour with spontaneity. His works have been exhibited internationally and fetch high prices on the art market. They are represented in renowned collections such as the MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Tate and the National Gallery of Art.
