From 1908 Emil Nolde devoted himself intensively to watercolor painting, which had long been forgotten in Germany. From 1913 he mainly used the absorbent Japanese paper, which established his wet-on-wet technique. His new watercolor technique was based on soaking damp Japanese paper with flowing watercolors, which resulted in unforeseeable changes and colors flowing into each other to create changing color centers.
