From 1908, Emil Nolde devoted himself intensively to watercolor painting, which had long been forgotten in Germany. From 1913 onwards, he mainly used the absorbent Japanese paper that established his wet-on-wet technique. His new watercolor technique was based on soaking damp Japanese paper with flowing watercolors, creating unpredictable changes and forming iridescent color centers that flowed into one another.
