The “Still Life with Fruit and Champagne Glass” is an absolute masterpiece by Johann Wilhelm Preyer. It shows all his skill and the greatness of his mastery in the art of painting, which is still fascinating and unsurpassed today. On a heavy, red tablecloth Preyer presents a lavish variety of fruits, a champagne glass and insects in front of a simple background that is evenly illuminated on the right half of the picture. The light falling from the top left seems to make the fresh, crisp grapes shine – the colour nuances range from strong blue-violet to ruby-red to gold-yellow. From the pomegranate that has just been cut open the red, delicate fruits, which seem to outdo each other in terms of freshness and content. The glass that has just been poured with champagne is enthroned above everything, in which the tingling and pearling gas bubbles rise and form a white crown. The fruits do not go undetected, because a fly on the strong orange and a wasp on the tablecloth have already joined the feast.
