Internationally, Johann Wilhelm Preyer is one of the first ranks of 19th century still life painters. He began his training in 1822 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he was soon able to successfully sell his first still lifes. He used his trips to Holland to study the works of the Dutch still life painters of the 17th and 18th centuries.
