The study “Four plums, three hazelnuts” is an important part of Johann Wilhelm Preyer’s oeuvre – the grapes in particular are a recurring motif in his still lifes, which he composed from close observations of nature with the help of his studies into virtuoso still lifes. The meticulous elaboration of plums and hazelnuts with shadows detach the objects from the unprocessed canvas and give them a haptic effect.
