With just a few strokes of pastel chalk, Walter Ophey succeeds in creating a living landscape: Ophey characterizes areas of landscape with different colours and thereby arranges them at a distance from the viewer at the same time. In the foreground there are isolated black stones next to the green grass. A black train drives over several brown hills in the middle distance over a bridge, while black trees stretch up on the left edge at the same distance. The horizon is formed by a blue mountain range and blue clouds in the sky. The rays of the red-orange sun alone overcome the distances and shine as far as the brown hills at the front. Typical of Ophey’s chalk drawings are above all the one-sided wiping of the lines, which creates the plasticity of the objects.
