During his travels, Mönsted made numerous sketches, which he then condensed into differentiated compositions in the studio. In “St. Vigilio on Lake Garda”, Mönsted chose the delightful view of the Punta San Vigilio peninsula on Lake Garda with the surrounding Italian Alps. The earthy colours of the village and the rocks as well as the radiant green of the local flora emphasize the intensity of the incoming sun and exude a warmth and freshness that can be felt. The bright blue of the sky and the lake contrasts with these warm tones. As in its numerous river and lake landscapes, the surroundings are reflected in the water, which gives the picture an idyllic calm.
