Alongside Max Liebermann and Lesser Ury, Walter Leistikow was an important figure in Berlin painting around 1900. He founded the “Secession” with Liebermann and was awarded the title of professor in 1907. Leistikow was regarded as an energetic advocate of modernism in Germany. His artistic beginnings can be traced back to his teachers Gude and Achenbach of the Düsseldorf school of painting.
