The French artist Jules Cavaillès was born in Carmaux and began his studies in 1922 at the “Académie Julian” in Paris. After his time at the Académie, he quickly came into contact with the Fauvists. He especially admired Derain, Vlaminck, Braque and Matisse. At the same time, Cavaillès was a follower of “Réalité Poétique”, according to whose maxim he always tried to express a great joie de vivre in his paintings.
With quick brushstrokes, he captures the still life and already decides here on strong colours and contrasts, which often manifest themselves in the finished works in a strong complementary contrast. The structure of the picture, which was thought through and sketched in pencil, still shines through the colors easily through some places. The exact reproduction of objects was of secondary importance to Jules Cavaillès, who described his own artistic ideal as follows: “The object must detach itself from its forms […] Nothing in a painting should remain uninhabited, nothing lifeless; everything must contribute to the harmony of the painting. That is what gives a painting its vitality.”
