Between 1906 and 1910 Clarenbach painted different variations of the Erft in winter, the later versions of which include “Winter on the Erft”. The special atmosphere of the winter landscape of the Lower Rhine is reproduced very impressively in these paintings, so that they were also enthusiastically received by the audience and became a kind of identification mark for Clarenbach’s painting.
