The Danish painter Emanuel Petersen visited Greenland several times and recorded his impressions in pictures, which aroused great interest in science and earned him the nickname “Greenland painter”.
“The view from Thorshavn”, the capital of the Faroe Islands, could have been taken during one of Petersen’s trips to Greenland via Iceland. Like a modern, abstract work, the blue brushstrokes form the sea and the sky, which mixes with the setting evening light. Just an irregular brushstroke suggests the horizon and land. The different shades of color and the gentle flow of colours convey the atmosphere in an impressive way.
