Born in Paris in 1880 and a pupil of Félix-Joseph Barrias, Marie Lucas-Robiquet was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1922. She is believed to have lived mostly in Paris, but her work indicates an active travel schedule. Many of her Oriental paintings are set in Algeria or Tunisia. It is unclear whether she experienced the motifs first-hand or used sketches by other artists. There is no specific evidence of travel to these countries, nor of the artists’ colony in Volendam, the Netherlands, which was popular around 1900 and to which several of her paintings allude. In addition, she was internationally successful as a portraitist, including in the USA and South America.
