The topographically more accurate title Blick auf die Schlossruine Auerbach should read: “View through a Romanesque gateway to the ruins of Auerbach Castle”. Essential elements of Auerbach Castle are included in the picture, others are freely invented by the painter, which had already been noticed by the newspapers 140 years ago: “Of course, he now no longer stuck to the portrait of the buildings, but used them as motifs for his free compositions”.
