Gaston Balande was a French artist and curator who spent much of his life in various cities in France. He was a student of Fernand Cormon and Rupert Bunny and worked in a variety of styles, including a “dark” phase in which he depicted political and social themes in sombre colours, and a later phase in the Post-Impressionist style. Balande had a long-standing exhibition presence in various art salons and received several awards, including the Légion d’Honneur. He also worked on decorative projects and illustrated books. An exhibition of his work before the Second World War was presented in La Rochelle in 2004.
